Humble Grumble are serving an ironical cocktail of various musical styles. Humble Grumble was founded in 1996 from Dearest Companion, a belgian band which consisted of jazz and folk musicians. At first they occupied themselves mostly with folk rock and not jazz. But always with a good portion of humor. In the beginnings Gabor Humble Vörös (back then with Tom Theuns) was composing the music. In the course of time the instrumentation changed and so did their musical orientation. They developped towards jazz and progressive of the 70's. In their live performances they show their huge variety and originality. The mixed up style of jazz, rock, avantgarde and folk, always in combination with humorous parts of the show, links them inevitable with zappaesque music. Well, if the listener is baffled because of this mixture, it's Zappa who is used for explanations. With Humble Grumble in mind this comparison is lopsided: Here pliant sounds and especially beautiful melodies are coming to the fore. Only casually one is ripped out of this oasis of well-being by spontaneous absurdity and unforeseen elements of surprises.
In their newest album „Flanders Fields“ (2011, AltrOck-Label) a lot of female guest singers are contributing besides Megan Quill and Lisa Jordens. This is helping Humble Grumble to an astonishing easyness and sometimes nearly hit-like melodies which accounts for this mixture of avantgarde, paired with irony and humor. Compaired to their more rock-like beginning Humble Grumble calmed down a lot, the music is more homogenous, not so strange but enjoyable. We will have fun with the Belgians, especially when the guitar is reminding us of Daevid Allen and their ironic humoresque jazzbrassprog is animating one ore another of us to dance.
