» The Yellow Snow Crystals
Trombones instead of guitars, german lyrics instead of american slang, a lot of brass, nearly no strings... that's Yellow Snow Crystals.
We all know how dangerous the yellow snow can be, probably it's even more risky when crystalline. Nevertheless we dare to make way for The Yellow Snow Crystals!
The band is truly fancy and was hailed at the Mosae Zappa Festival in Maastricht. So of course they also belong to Zappanale.
We only had this problem: How can we present a band on our website when you can't find any information except a few pictures and vides in the internet? So we asked Paul Hubweber himself for a description:
“There is nothing in cyberspace because the band is quite new - formed in December 2010. And we all have different things to do than care about that.
So here's the story of YSC:
Paul Hubweber, trombone, vocals
Alex Morsey, contrabass, sousaphone, guembri, vocals
Simon Camatta, drums
Gerhard Horriar, vocals, narration
On my last solo CD ‚Loverman‘ with 11 love songs there's also a version of ‚evelyn, a modified dog‘. My good mentor Stinkfuss said: 'Why not doing a Zappa program'. Hm, I thought - alone? No, I don't feel like it. But together with Simon and Alex... why not?
From the very beginning it was clear that it should be about the more 'rough' material. Because there are some things that can't be beaten. I for myself have never heard something which was more exciting than ‚g-spot tornado‘, ‚inca roads‘, ‚echindas....‘ and 100 other things as the originals on ‚Jazz From Hell‘, ‚One Size...‘, ‚Roxy...‘. In the early 90's I was a member of a brass ensemble which played arrangements which were allowed by Gail. But even our ‚big swifty‘ ws not able to hold a candle to the originals.
so whatfor?
To sound as authentic as possible: ‚token‘ as latin, ‚beach‘ as bossa, ‚promise‘ as jazzwalz, varios over ‚don´t eat the yellow snow‘, .... to play with the material, and that without an instrument of harmony, but with 2 brass and a contrabass, percussions and vocals. That sounds funny. ‘king kong’ is destined to be done as improvisation, same goes for ‘filthy habits’ , ‘deathless horsie’ stands for audience participation.
‚stinkfoot‘, ‚slime‘ and some text passages from ‚dumb all over‘ were german from beginning.
Soon it became clear that when I acted as main performer the quality of the trombones went down. So, i think to myself why not having another performer? The only one Gerhard Horriar is ‚Zappatist‘ and as Master-of-poetry-slam at home in the ‚word‘. I think that he created real poesy in the ‚schleim‘ (slime).
So it's not about covering songs but about what can we do that´s fantastic with this material, these instruments and the german language? In the band VBM band we fried Beatles songs like ‚get back‘, ‚day tripper‘, ‚penny lane‘.... and ‚nix happiness‘, ‚walruss‘, which were already the very best.“
