Maxime Delporte is a passionate and talented young composer based in Toulouse, France who combines jazz, rock, classical and more into a crazy new music filled with compositional surprises, brilliant solos and wild juxtapositions. Written for and performed by his astounding band Stabat Akish, the music is tight, virtuosic and powerful—perfect for fans of Zappa, Zs and Zorn.
Maxime Delporte was born in 1976 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He arrived in Marseille, France, in 1985. After having studied piano and flute, he played guitar, drums and trumpet, and then chose double bass for principal instrument. After directing a big band for 3 years, he comes to Toulouse where he participates in several projects with different musicians : Abdu Salim, Christian « TonTon » Salut, Pierre Dayraud, Jean-Marc Padovani… He has performed in french Jazz Festivals like « Nancy Jazz Pulsatons », « Jazz in Marciac », « Jazz sur son 31 », « Millau en Jazz », and in other countries ( Spain, Italia, Tunisia, Algeria, Marroco, Portugal…).
Also a composer, the first album of his own band : « Stabat Akish » has been released in april 2009 on John Zorn’s Label : Tzadik (New York). The 2nd album : "Nebulos" has been released 20 January 2012.
A French rock project STABAT AKISH have grown gradually in Toulouse since 2007, as an experimental sextet that fling mix of jazz, avantgarde, Rock In Opposition or something, around the bassist / composer Maxime DELPORTE. Dug up by a free jazz giant John Zohn
As much as I try to avoid resorting to definitions that might sound a bit overblown, “jazz meets chamber rock with a liberal dash of Zappaesque humour thrown in for good measure” describes Stabat Akish’s music quite effectively. With a distinctive, mostly acoustic instrumentation that rules out the guitar on all but one track, but places a heavy emphasis on reeds and mallet percussion (as well as on founder Maxime Delporte’s expertly handled double bass) they privilege a sophisticated delivery that, while undeniably full of twists and turns, is not as daunting as the typical output of other bands and artists found under the RIO/Avant umbrella.
